Growing up in a home with limited resources is a challenge to anyone in that situation, but for those people who use that background to strengthen their determination to succeed the negatives can be turned into positives in the longer run.
Nyasha Chigumira, a 35-year-old customer service representative in MultiChoice Zimbabwe, came from a home with a large family in which resources were limited, but she resolved to be strong and to be a survivor and her resolve has made her today a woman of strength and determination.
“Growing up was not easy for me as I had many siblings and everything was scarce; there just was not enough for all of us,” she said.
“All this made me realise that in life you have to be strong and to try to survive in whatever circumstances you find yourself and it has, in fact, made me a strong woman emotionally, physically and mentally. “Challenges in life do bring hurt, but they make you stronger and braver if you remain positive and forward-looking.
Celebrating international women’s month throughout March has been a joy for Nyasha, who feels that being a woman means she can dig into strengths such as kindness, gentleness, empathy and patience to deliver service in the workplace in a useful and valuable way.
“Women’s month is a time of year to celebrate myself and the women I know, a month full of expression when we can remember we are useful and relevant.
“It brings me an opportunity to embrace being feminine and recognise the qualities naturally associated with that,” she said.
A rallying theme in the MultiChoice family across Africa this March has been the slogan Embrace Equity, which Nyasha sees as “an appeal from the girl child to society to allow the girl child to be awarded the same opportunities as the male child and to recognise that women have the same value as men.”
Her advice to young women is: follow your dreams, work hard, aim at achieving more and more, not forgetting to appreciate yourself along the way because you deserve that.
“Do your best and always remember, as I do, that God will see you through every situation you go through,” said Nyasha.
As a woman who loves love, she enjoys romance on DStv and one channel that captures her attention when she wants to relax is Telemundo, with its huge library of shows that focus on relationships and romances.
“And, of course, I am able in this time of debilitating power cuts to still enjoy my favoured shows with the My DStv App, which has added values of reducing remote control conflicts in the family and helps keep my children entertained when we are away from home,” she said.
