Chegutu – A 35-year-old man from Chegutu has been sentenced to five months in prison for indecently assaulting his 8-year-old niece, a case that has horrified the local community and reignited calls for stronger child protection measures.
The disturbing incident occurred on December 31, 2024, when the accused entered his sister’s home and found the young girl asleep on the couch. In a gross violation of trust, he removed her underwear and rubbed his genitals against her buttocks.
The child woke up during the assault and bravely reported the crime to her mother, who immediately alerted the authorities.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) confirmed that the perpetrator received an eight-month sentence, with three months suspended for five years on condition he does not reoffend.
The leniency of the punishment has sparked public outrage, with many arguing that such crimes demand stricter penalties to deter future offenders.
In response, the NPAZ emphasized the need for collective vigilance. “Protecting children is a shared responsibility,” a spokesperson said. “Families must create safe spaces where children can report abuse without fear.”
Community leaders are now pushing for awareness campaigns on child safety and the importance of speaking out against abuse.
They stress the need for open family discussions to educate children about their rights and empower them to seek help.
This case underscores the urgent need for stronger legal protections and support systems for young victims.
