Kariba – In a bid to enhance safety and reduce crime in the resort town of Kariba, Chief Superintendent Pepukai Knowledge Mhiripiri has called for a stronger partnership between law enforcement and the media.
This plea was made during a recent visit by representatives from the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ), including ZUJ National Executive member Admore Mbonda and ZUJ Kariba branch Secretary Obert Siamilandu.
During the visit, Chief Superintendent Mhiripiri emphasized the critical role that journalists play in informing the public and shaping perceptions about crime.
He stated, “The media is a vital partner in our efforts to create a safer community.
By reporting factual information and collaborating with the police, journalists can help us effectively combat crime.”
Mhiripiri urged the media to uphold high standards of reporting, particularly when it comes to crime-related stories.
“Accurate reporting can prevent misinformation, which often leads to public panic. We must work hand in hand to ensure our community is well-informed and safe,” he added.
Admore Mbonda echoed Mhiripiri’s sentiments, highlighting the responsibility of journalists to report responsibly.
“As journalists, we have the power to influence public opinion. It is imperative that we work closely with the police to ensure that our reporting aids in crime prevention rather than exacerbating the situation,” he said.
Obert Siamilandu, who also participated in the discussions, remarked, “We appreciate the Chief Superintendent’s commitment to engaging with the media. It is crucial for us to build this relationship to foster a safer Kariba for all residents and visitors.”
The call for collaboration comes at a time when Kariba, known for its scenic beauty and as a tourist destination, faces challenges related to petty crimes.
Local authorities are hopeful that by fostering better communication and cooperation between the police and journalists, they can create a more secure environment for the community.
As the dialogue continues, both law enforcement and the media are committed to working together towards a common goal: a safe and thriving Kariba.
