A wave of fear gripped Kariba residents after armed robbers broke into the Royal Casino at the Zambezi Valley complex, making off with US$8,000 in cash during the early hours of the morning.
The brazen heist has left the community shaken and questioning local security measures.
The robbers not only targeted the casino’s safe but also vandalized two nearby shops, looting clothing and various grocery items in a spree that eyewitnesses described as chaotic and unsettling.
Residents woke up to the aftermath of the break-in, with shop owners surveying the damage and counting their losses.
The Royal Casino, which is only guarded between 1:30pm and 1:30pm, was left vulnerable during the early morning hours—a security lapse that has sparked concern among local business owners.
This incident, being one of the most significant robberies in Kariba’s recent history, has highlighted the need for improved safety measures in the area.
Authorities are currently investigating the robbery, but no arrests have been made as of publication time. Local police have yet to comment officially on the case, further fueling frustration and unease among residents.
Gemnation reporters visited the scene, speaking to business owners and concerned community members.
One resident, visibly distraught, remarked, “We are no longer safe here. Something must be done before another business becomes a target.”
