Kariba-In a move aimed at alleviating long-standing transportation and infrastructure issues, Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) Kariba recently received two buses and two lorries, courtesy Of Zpc acting Managing Director Engineer Norbet Matarutse.
The handover ceremony, held in Kariba, brought together the local ZPC workforce, who celebrated the much-needed addition of the vehicles, which are expected to ease daily commutes and improve operational efficiency.
Engineer Matarutse, addressing the workers during the handover, expressed a commitment to further upgrades. “This is to facilitate the transport situation,” he said. “Slowly, but we are moving forward. We’ve managed to address some of our transport challenges, and we want to ensure our drivers handle these vehicles with care.”
He said the additional buses were expected in the future to further address the transportation needs of the staff.
The cost of the newly acquired vehicles, two buses, and two lorries totaled approximately USD $417,000.
The buses, priced at USD $322,000, and the lorries, at USD $95,000, represent a significant investment in the well-being of the workforce, who have faced ongoing transport issues. Due to a lack of company-owned transport, ZPC Kariba had been hiring private buses and vehicles to meet its employees’ needs.
Acting General Manager Mr Tungamirai Mazarire, a 12-year veteran of ZPC Kariba, also welcomed the new additions. “This arrival is a major boost for us.
“It’s been many years since we last received company vehicles like these, and they will greatly improve our transport situation,” he said, highlighting the positive impact this will have on the workforce’s morale and the efficiency of daily operations.
Transport improvements are part of a broader ZPC Kariba initiative to enhance the welfare of its employees. In 2024, ZPC Kariba also received 14 operational vehicles to further address internal transport needs.
Additionally, Engineer Matarutse noted that ZPC has drilled four boreholes in response to water supply challenges and has begun construction on a clinic. The clinic’s foundation has already been laid, and when complete, it will provide essential health services to the employees and their families.
Plans are also underway for the construction of 11 housing units for ZPC Kariba staff. These measures are part of a strategic investment in the employees’ quality of life, aiming to foster a sense of community and security within the workforce.
With ongoing projects and future plans, ZPC Kariba’s management is demonstrating a commitment to the welfare of its employees, creating a foundation for a more resilient, motivated, and productive workforce.
