Zimbabwe’s electricity demand is projected to surge to a staggering 6,300 megawatts (MW) by 2050, signaling an urgent need for expansion in the nation’s energy infrastructure.
Gloria Magombo, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, revealed the projection at the launch of the Zambezi River Authority’s (ZRA) corporate strategy in Siavonga, Zambia, today.
Magombo stressed the importance of addressing this growing demand to ensure affordable, reliable, and sustainable electricity for Zimbabweans.
“The time to act is now if we are to achieve middle-income status by 2030 and maintain that growth by 2050,” she emphasized.
The Zambezi River Authority plays a crucial role in harnessing the region’s vast hydroelectric power potential, and its strategic plans are designed to address the energy demands of both Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Munyaradzi Munodawafa, Chief Executive of ZRA, expressed optimism about the strategy, marking 38 years of the authority’s existence.
“This strategy will ensure sustainability and foster regional collaboration as we confront future challenges,” Munodawafa stated.
In addition to energy demand, the strategy also tackles the effects of climate change, with Mafayo Zimba, Assistant Director in Zambia’s Ministry of Energy, highlighting the importance of proactive climate response.
“This strategy reflects the aspirations of both Zimbabwe and Zambia in addressing climate change,” Zimba noted.
To meet future energy needs, experts emphasize the importance of investing in renewable sources like solar and hydroelectric power.
Without significant upgrades to the country’s energy infrastructure, Zimbabwe risks falling short of meeting its growing electricity demands.
As Zimbabwe looks to achieve middle-income status, securing a sustainable energy future through innovation and investment is essential.
The projected increase in electricity demand serves as a clear wake-up call for policymakers and energy stakeholders to act swiftly to safeguard the country’s energy future.
