The recent wave of rainfall-induced disasters across Zimbabwe has left a trail of destruction, with severe impacts on infrastructure, communities, and the loss of lives, according to Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Daniel Garwe.
The torrential rains have caused extensive damage to vital infrastructure, including schools, health facilities, homes, roads, and bridges.
The minister’s statement comes as the country grapples with the aftermath of these disasters, which have also led to tragic fatalities due to drowning, lightning strikes, and mining accidents.
Minister Garwe conveyed the deepest condolences of President Cde Dr ED Mnangagwa to the families affected by these calamities, acknowledging the significant emotional and material toll on the nation.
“The President extends his deepest condolences to all affected families during these disasters,” Garwe stated.
While some regions have borne the brunt of the damage, Minister Garwe confirmed that the devastating effects of the rains have been felt across the country.
Flooding has become widespread, with various districts struggling to cope with the challenges posed by the heavy rains.
Despite the hardships, the Minister praised the coordinated efforts of emergency services and first responders.
The Department of Civil Protection, together with the ZRP Sub Aqua Unit and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, are actively involved in search and rescue operations, working tirelessly to save lives and assist those in need.
Garwe also emphasized the importance of community involvement in disaster response. “Communities have played a vital role as first responders, and their support is crucial in times of crisis,” he said.
With the forecast predicting further heavy rains, the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works has urged all citizens, especially those in low-lying and vulnerable areas, to follow safety advisories and evacuate when necessary.
“We strongly advise citizens to avoid open areas during storms, refrain from crossing flooded rivers, and remain alert by staying informed through reliable weather updates,” Garwe warned.
In addition, the Minister issued a specific caution to artisanal miners, urging them to suspend their operations until ground conditions stabilize.
The floods and heavy rains have significantly heightened the risks for those working in unstable environments, contributing to the series of mining accidents that have claimed lives.
As part of the ongoing recovery efforts, the government is mobilizing resources under the National Multi-Hazard Contingent Plan.
Minister Garwe assured the public that the government is committed to ensuring effective response and recovery, despite the challenges posed by the widespread disasters.
The Minister’s message is clear: preparedness, caution, and community cooperation are vital in reducing the risks associated with the ongoing rains.
As the country continues to face the challenges of the current rainy season, Zimbabweans are urged to stay vigilant and work together to overcome the disasters and begin the rebuilding process.
