Zimbabwe is one of the three beneficiaries in SADC to receive technical support towards the implementation of a National Emergency Telecommunication Plan by the International Telecommunication Union.

Speaking at the first workshop towards the implementation Thursday, Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe Director General Dr Gift Machengete said central to the success of the plan was the role of both the Ministry of ICT as the Policy Makers and the ICT sector regulator.

“As the guardians of Zimbabwe’s telecommunications landscape, the Ministry the ICT and the regulator play a crucial role in ensuring that telecommunications infrastructure is robust, reliable, and responsive to the needs of the population, especially during emergencies.

“By crafting relevant policies and giving policy direction, the Ministry of ICT ensures the smooth functioning of the ICT sector,” Dr Machengete said.

“Likewise, by setting standards, issuing licenses, and monitoring compliance, the regulator creates an enabling environment for the effective deployment of emergency telecommunications resources.”

Dr Machengete said the Ministry and the Regulator were grateful of the helping hand which is ITU.

“The ITU’s decision to provide technical support to Zimbabwe underscores the importance of this initiative and the confidence placed in our nation’s commitment to enhancing emergency response capabilities.

“Through this partnership, we will leverage the expertise and resources of the ITU to strengthen our telecommunications infrastructure, enhance coordination among stakeholders, and ensure that our citizens have access to reliable communication channels during times of crisis,” he said.

Dr Machengete said by enhancing Zimbabwe’s capacity to respond to emergencies, it would not only save lives but also minimize the socioeconomic impact of disasters.

“Timely and effective communication can facilitate the coordination of emergency response efforts, the dissemination of critical information to affected populations, and the mobilization of resources for relief and recovery,” he said.

He also extended gratitude to the ITU for their support and guidance throughout the process.
