Zimbabwe is in the process of drafting a National Emergency Telecommunication Plan transposing the SADC model with assistance from International Telecommunication Union.
Speaking at a workshop on transposing the SADC model NETP in Zimbabwe, ICT, Postal and Courier Services Deputy Minister, Honorable Dingumuzi Phuti, urged stakeholders to work together with dedication, commitment, and a sense of urgency.
“Our collective efforts today will have a lasting impact on our ability to respond to emergencies and safeguard the well-being of our citizens.
“I would like to once again thank the ITU for their support, commend all participants for their dedication to this cause, and express my confidence that together, we will succeed in transposing the SADC Model NETP in Zimbabwe,” Hon Phuti said.
The workshop provided Zimbabwe with a valuable opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions, share best practices, and collaborate on developing a tailored National Emergency Telecommunication Plan that meets the specific needs and challenges of Zimbabwe.
The SADC Model NETP provides a comprehensive framework for establishing robust emergency telecommunication systems, enhancing coordination among stakeholders, and ensuring the availability of communication services during crises.
Hon Phuti said by aligning our national plan with the model, Zimbabwe not only improves its preparedness but also contribute to regional efforts to enhance emergency communication capabilities.
“The decisions taken by the SADC Ministers underscore the importance of leveraging telecommunications technologies and regulatory frameworks to strengthen emergency communication systems in the region.
“By implementing these recommendations and initiatives, SADC Member States can enhance their resilience and responsiveness to disasters, ultimately contributing to the safety and well-being of their populations,” Hon Phuti said.
He said emergency communication was critical component of disaster management, and it plays a vital role in saving lives and mitigating the impact of disasters.
“By transposing the SADC Model NETP, we are taking a proactive step towards ensuring that our country is well-prepared to respond effectively to emergencies and disasters,” he said.
