Chinhoyi – The headmaster of Vuti High School, Brain Chigudu, has been arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) in connection with allegations of corruptly awarding a US$155,000 tender for the purchase of a 56-seater bus.
The arrest has sent shockwaves through the local education sector and raised serious questions about procurement practices within government institutions.
Chigudu was brought before Mr. Vakayi Douglas Chikwekwe at the Chinhoyi Magistrate Court, where he faced charges of criminal abuse of duty.
According to the prosecution, Chigudu bypassed proper procurement procedures by awarding the tender directly to Quest Motors Corporation, a company that had not even submitted a bid in response to the official tender notice.
During the proceedings, state prosecutor Mr Brighton Machekera outlined the seriousness of the charges against Chigudu.
The headmaster was granted bail of US$300, with strict conditions that include a prohibition from contacting state witnesses and a ban on visiting Vuti High School until the case is concluded.
The arrest has sparked outrage among parents and staff at Vuti High School, who are now calling for a thorough investigation into the school’s procurement practices.
Many are demanding greater transparency and accountability in the management of school funds, citing concerns over possible wider corruption.
Chigudu is set to return to court on February 3, 2025, for further proceedings. The ZACC’s continued crackdown on corruption highlights the government’s commitment to tackling misconduct within public institutions and serves as a stark reminder of the need for ethical standards and accountability in the handling of public resources.
As the case unfolds, the wider implications for the governance of educational institutions in Zimbabwe remain to be seen, with many hoping that this will lead to systemic reforms in procurement practices across the country.
