Kariba — In a chilling reminder of the escalating Human-wildlife Conflict in the region, two fishermen lost their lives in Lake Kariba after a hippo capsized their boat on April 25, 2025.
The incident, which occurred around 3:30 PM, took a more tragic turn when one of the men, while trying to swim to safety, was attacked and killed by crocodiles.
The victims have been identified as James Mundande and Emmanuel Maketo.
Eyewitnesses described the terrifying sequence of events. “They were fishing when a hippo suddenly charged, ramming the boat and overturning it,” said a local woman who was fishing nearby.
“We never saw the second man again, and the one who tried to swim was attacked by crocodiles near the shore. It was horrifying to watch.”
Mashonaland West provincial spokesperson Inspector Ian Kowera confirmed the incident.
“A report was made at ZRP Kariba by Zimparks officials at the Charara site. Search efforts are underway, and the ZRP Sub Aqua Unit is involved in the recovery operations,” he said.
The tragedy highlights the growing number of dangerous encounters between humans and wildlife in the Kariba area.
To date, over 15 incidents involving crocodile and hippo attacks have been recorded this year.
Authorities are urging both residents and tourists to exercise extreme caution when engaging in activities near the lake.
“The risk of attack is significant. We urge the public to remain vigilant at all times,” Inspector Kowera added.
As recovery efforts continue, the Kariba community is left mourning and confronting the harsh realities of life on the edge of the wild.
