POTRAZ Board Chairman Mr Takudzwa Zvobgo emphasized the crucial role of collaboration in implementing Zimbabwe’s Cyber and Data Protection Act [Chapter 12:07].
Speaking at a breakfast meeting on Wednesday, Mr Zvobgo thanked stakeholders from various sectors for their commitment to data protection, stressing the importance of a united effort to build a resilient digital economy.
“This gathering reflects our shared responsibility in building a secure, data-driven digital economy,” Mr Zvobgo said, acknowledging the collective dedication to privacy and accountability.
He highlighted that the Act, which was enacted nearly three years ago, aims to promote transparency and respect for citizens’ right to privacy.
The recent promulgation of Statutory Instrument 155 of 2024, on September 13, has now provided a clear framework for advancing these protections.
Zvobgo acknowledged the challenges faced in implementing the Act and expressed optimism about the future.
He urged attendees to consider the Act as not merely a regulatory compliance measure, but as a foundation for building digital trust across Zimbabwe. He quoted Helen Keller, noting, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much,” to underscore the need for partnership in achieving the Act’s goals.
The chairman outlined POTRAZ’s role as the Data Protection Authority and presented the roadmap for implementing the Act and accompanying regulations.
He encouraged organizations to view compliance as an opportunity, stressing that aligning with data protection requirements would enhance resilience and mitigate risks, positioning businesses as leaders in responsible data handling.
“The future depends on what you do today,” Mr. Zvobgo stated, quoting Mahatma Gandhi.
He emphasized that while adapting to compliance may involve initial costs, the long-term benefits include regulatory and reputational risk mitigation, setting Zimbabwe on a path toward a secure digital future.
As Zimbabwe navigates its journey toward a digitally secure economy, Mr Zvobgo urged stakeholders to work together to embed data protection into organizational practices, building trust within the nation’s digital landscape.
