ICT, Postal and Courier Services Minister, Dr Tatenda Mavetera has emphasised the critical importance of data protection for Zimbabwe’s digital economy.
Addressing stakeholders at a breakfast meeting, Dr Mavetera highlighted that effective data protection is essential for safeguarding citizens’ privacy and building trust in Zimbabwe’s digital transformation.
“Data protection is more than compliance—it is a new culture we must adopt,” Dr. Mavetera stated. She commended the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) for organizing its first-ever breakfast meeting on Data Protection, a crucial step in educating the business community about the Cyber and Data Protection Act [Chapter 12:07].
With the goal of becoming a digital economy by 2030, the Minister called for widespread support of the Act, urging businesses, government institutions, and organizations to embrace responsible data handling practices.
“Central to the global economy now is accountability and transparency in processing personal data,” Dr Mavetera noted.
With the Act aligning Zimbabwe’s standards with international benchmarks, Dr Mavetera stressed that compliance with data protection is vital to Zimbabwe’s competitiveness in global markets.
Dr Mavetera clarified that the Cyber and Data Protection Act is designed not to curtail freedoms, but to safeguard them. By enhancing privacy rights and promoting responsible data processing, the Act aims to build a trustworthy digital environment.
“Every Zimbabwean has a right to privacy, and this Act is here to protect it,” she said, underscoring the government’s commitment to a balanced approach between digital innovation and data security.
In her remarks, the Minister highlighted ongoing efforts, including the collaboration between POTRAZ and the Harare Institute of Technology to train Data Protection Officers.
She urged organisations to ensure their compliance with the Act, particularly as registration deadlines approach.
“A digital economy grounded in trust will attract investment and drive growth,” Dr. Mavetera concluded.
“I urge senior leaders to embrace this Act as an opportunity to lead, align with global standards, and position Zimbabwe as an attractive digital economy.”
As Zimbabwe takes steps toward a secure digital future, the government remains committed to supporting businesses and fostering an environment where data protection is a foundational pillar of the nation’s progress.
