Chinhoyi- The body of National Hero Cde Walter Basopo has arrived in Chinhoyi, where it will lie in state ahead of burial at the National Heroes Acre on Wednesday.
President Dr. Emmerson Mnangagwa will preside over the double burial ceremony for Cde Basopo and Cde Victor Rungani.
The body was received at Chinhoyi High School by Mashonaland West Provincial Secretary Josphat Jaji, service chiefs, and ZANU-PF leadership.
ZANU PF Provincial Chairperson Cde Mary Mliswa-Chikoka described the late Basopo as a good advisor and committed father figure.
“He was a dedicated cadre who diligently worked for the good of his country and was always ready to offer constructive advice,” she said.
Cde Basopo, also known by his Chimurenga name Gerry Dzasukwa, was born on February 23, 1959, in Gutu district, Masvingo. He joined the liberation struggle under ZANLA in June 1976 and underwent military training at Tembwe Camp. After independence, he served in the President’s Department for 45 illustrious years.
Cde Basopo is survived by two wives, Ketty and Nyasha, four children, and several grandchildren. Workmates described him as a diligent, hardworking, and trustworthy leader committed to his work.
He passed away at Life Groenkloof Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa, and was conferred national hero status by President Mnangagwa in recognition of his immense contributions to the country’s liberation struggle.
