The Institute of African Knowledge (INSTAK) has congratulated President Emmerson D. Mnangagwa on his birthday while calling on Zimbabweans to use Munhumutapa Day to deepen appreciation of Africa’s rich historical and civilisational heritage.
In a statement issued on September 15, 2026, INSTAK Board Chairperson Professor Simbi Mubako said the institute joined Zimbabweans at home and abroad in commemorating Munhumutapa Day, describing it as an important addition to the national calendar.
“Munhumutapa represents far more than a name from the distant past,” Prof Mubako said, noting that the legacy represented African societies that exercised political authority, developed sophisticated governance systems, built productive economies and participated in extensive regional and international trade.
He said the commemoration provided an opportunity to reflect on the depth and sophistication of African civilisation while strengthening historical consciousness among Zimbabweans.
According to INSTAK, understanding Africa’s past is essential to shaping its future, with the institute stressing the importance of preserving African knowledge systems, heritage and historical achievements.
The organisation also commended President Mnangagwa for his support of initiatives aimed at reclaiming and preserving African history, particularly the establishment of the Museum of African Liberation at Liberation City.
Prof Mubako said the President’s support had helped INSTAK advance the museum project, whose significance extends beyond Zimbabwe, while noting that the Government has accorded the Museum of African Liberation National Project Status.
“As Zimbabwe marks Munhumutapa Day, we celebrate the opportunity to place our rich heritage more firmly within the national consciousness,” he said.
INSTAK said the day should inspire young Zimbabweans to learn more about the African civilisations, institutions, innovations and personalities that shaped the continent before colonialism.
The institute further linked the commemoration to the national development philosophy encapsulated in the mantra, “nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo”, emphasising the role of Africans in determining their own development and future.
Prof Mubako also conveyed birthday wishes to President Mnangagwa, wishing him “many more years of good health and service to the nation.”
The statement was issued on behalf of the INSTAK Board, Chief Executive Officer Ambassador Kwame Muzawazi, management and staff.
