The African continent is not only home to some of the finest talent the world has to offer, but it has also been the backdrop for many international films. With our diverse, indigenous beauty that expands across 54 countries, it’s no surprise that international film companies choose to shoot their world-class, multimillion-dollar-grossing movies on our unique continent. From the striking cities of South Africa to the breath-taking deserts of Namibia, some of the greatest films and shows have been shot in or feature Africa.
See Johannesburg in Avengers: Age of Ultron
In 2014, Johannesburg welcomed a team of superheroes to South Africa. The Avengers: Age of Ultron sees Iron Man and the Hulk face off in the Joburg city centre. Filming took place in February 2014 and the final product ended up making $1.04 billion at the box office in 2015. Africa, represent!
Although you won’t catch our continent, you can get in on the Marvel action with one of the most dramatic instalments of the Avengers franchise in Avengers: Endgame. It follows the aftermath of Avengers: Infinity War, where the universe is in ruins and needs to be restored. The Avengers assemble, along with their allies, to reverse what was done by Thanos and restore the balance of the universe. Catch it on Sunday, 20 June, at 13:05 on M-Net Movies 2, DStv Channel 106.

Get a taste of Namibia in Mad Max: Fury Road
When it comes to adrenaline-pumping, desert-based action, Mad Max certainly delivers. But did you know that even though the film is set in Australia, it was shot in Namibia in the breath-taking Namib Desert? Not only was this film shot in Africa, but it also features South African local, Charlize Theron. The film won six Oscars, and most of the crew spent a year living in Namibia while filming, which is why so many of them mentioned the country in their acceptance speeches.

Botswana represents in The Amazing Race
This reality series is no stranger to travelling the world and taking in beautiful locations. In season 7, teams had to travel through Argentina, South Africa, and India before returning to America via the United Kingdom and the Caribbean. While in Southern Africa, the contestants travelled through Botswana, completing tasks like carrying loads on their heads (without using their hands of course) and milking goats.
While the season has come and gone, you can still take in the best locally produced reality entertainment by watching season 8 of Survivor South Africa. Shot along the Wild Coast during Covid restrictions, this season showcases one of South Africa’s most beautiful, untouched locations.
