Kariba— In a significant advancement for the Kariba Dam Rehabilitation Program, the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) has successfully completed quality checks on floodgate 1, indicating a crucial step forward in the long-term sustainability of this vital infrastructure.
The checks were confirmed by ZRA Planning Officer Engineer Munesushe Mudzi, who emphasized the importance of these procedures as part of the dam’s commissioning phase.

The testing of floodgate 1 follows the successful evaluation of floodgate 2, showcasing the meticulous efforts being undertaken to ensure the dam’s operational efficiency. “We conducted a test for source number 1, which is gate number 1,” Engineer Mudzi stated during a press briefing. “We utilized approximately 1,500 cubic meters of water, equating to the power generated for about 30 seconds. This is a critical quality check that we have performed after five years of extensive rehabilitation work.”
The Kariba Dam, one of the largest reservoirs in the world, is pivotal not only for power generation but also for water management in the Zambezi River Basin. With the ongoing challenges posed by climate change and aging infrastructure, the rehabilitation program is crucial for safeguarding the dam’s structural integrity and operational performance.
Initiated in 2019, the rehabilitation efforts have focused on enhancing the safety and functionality of the dam’s floodgates, crucial components that manage water flow and prevent over-topping during periods of heavy rain.
Engineers are rigorously checking for potential leaks and ensuring that the gates can operate effectively under varying conditions.
“This testing is not just about the current state but is a proactive measure to prevent future issues,” Mudzi explained. “Our goal is to ensure that the Kariba Dam remains a reliable source of hydroelectric power and water management for years to come.”
