I’m the first sungura artist to engage fans on IG & FB says Peter Moyo

Sungura protégé Peter Dhewa Moyo says he is the first sungura artist to engage fans on Instagram and Facebook.

Sungura Bae as he is now popularly known on social media platforms said in an interview with Classic 263’s Witness Matema that he used Instagram and Facebook to appeal to his younger fans.

“Yes, I was the first to be able to engage fans on Instagram and Facebook before that no other sungura artists was doing that and of course, that made me appeal to younger fans who are on social media,” he said.

“I also hope to drop singles with accompanying videos in the first quarter of next year. I once recorded a 7 minute song but most of the elderly fans thought I was now losing steam because they are used to songs that go for 11 to 12 minutes long. So at the end, it’s about a balance between retaining the old fans as well as growing new fans.”

The Utakataka Express band leader believes social media is a way of communicating and engaging fans.

Dhewa is featured on Philani Phitso Mhlanga’s new single simply titled –Dare Pavamwe.

The laidback song was released to critical acclaim as it explores violence against women.

“Every woman is special, she must be respected. All men must protect a girl child.

“Mukadzi wese ngarespectwe ndokodzero yavo. Pane nyanya vanotaurisa asi kana waona kuti haunakirwe ibva wasiyana nazvo. Asi munhu anonzi mukadzi ngarespectwe kana zvikangodaro nyika yedu inoita zviri right,” said Phitso.

He sings “varume vakuru manyaya kunyengedza pwere ngatitaure nezvazvo wamupa mimba wairamba wati adini mwanasikana uyo. Chakanaka chakanaka chingochiitira vese panyika.”

The song tells men not to abuse young girls especially those who do not want to take responsibility after impregnating them. Like most of Phitso’s songs, Dare Pavamwe is a social commentary which puts the girl child rights on the spotlight.
