Home at Last:  African Wild Dogs Return to Matusadona

A pair of wild dog packs — 20 individuals in total — were returned to Matusadona National Park in mid-February, a landmark reintroduction that conservationists say reinvigorates an ecosystem that had not seen the endangered Lycaon pictus for decades.

 The Matusadona Conservation Trust (MCT), the joint initiative between African Parks and the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) that co-manages the park, led the operation between February 15 and 17.

MCT described the reintroduction as a major milestone in a long-running effort to restore biodiversity across the Sebungwe landscape.

 Two cohesive packs — one of six and one of 14 animals — were translocated into specialised holding facilities in the Tashinga area and are being soft-released so they can acclimatise and establish territory before unrestricted movement in the park.

“To witness wild dogs returning to Matusadona after all these years is profoundly moving,” said park manager Michael Pelham. “Today, we welcome them home. Their presence will restore the natural rhythm of this ecosystem, the balance between predator and prey that makes wild places truly wild.”

The reintroduction is part of a broader push to rebuild healthy populations of key species through careful management and community engagement. Since 2020, MCT says it has carried out multiple wildlife translocations, bolstered anti-poaching systems and expanded community development programmes intended to reduce human-wildlife conflict and deliver benefits to people who share the landscape with wildlife.

“These translocations don’t happen by accident,” said Daniel Sithole, country manager for African Parks Zimbabwe.

“They are the result of sustained investment in every aspect of park management — from training rangers and building community trust, to conducting research and developing infrastructure.” Each adult dog has been fitted with a GPS collar so conservation teams can follow their movements and mitigate any potential conflict with neighbouring villages and livestock.

Changing the story angle: conservation as shared landscape recovery

While reintroductions often make headlines for the charismatic animals involved, the Matusadona operation highlights a less-seen story: the recovery of a functioning predator-prey dynamic as part of a community-centred conservation model.

Rather than a one-off rescue, the wild-dog translocation is being presented by managers as one linked step in a multi-year strategy to stabilise ecosystems, reduce poaching and create economic and social incentives for local people to support — not resist — wildlife recovery.

Wild dogs are among Africa’s most threatened large carnivores. With fewer than 7,000 individuals estimated continent-wide, their decline has been driven by shrinking habitat, infectious disease and lethal clashes with people protecting livestock.

 Because wild dogs range widely and hunt cooperatively, successful reintroductions require secure habitat, careful monitoring and good relations with neighbouring communities — all elements MCT and partners say they have worked to strengthen.

Two local leaders — Chief Mola and Chief Musamba — offered measured support for the reintroduction while emphasising community welfare and traditional land-use concerns.

Chief Mola said: “Our people remember when these animals were part of our lands. We welcome their return if it brings balance to the bush and benefits to the villages.

But this must go together with support for our herders — measures to protect livestock, compensation where losses occur, and jobs for young people who now guard the boundaries of the park.”

Chief Musamba added: “Wildlife belongs to the land and the people. We have seen parks that exclude us and bring little benefit. This time, we must see continued engagement, training and real opportunities: scouts, guides, and community projects that share the gains of conservation.”

Both chiefs said formal agreements between MCT and local communities — covering compensation schemes, livestock protection measures and local employment — are crucial to preventing potential conflict as the dogs establish territories.

Conservationists acknowledge the species faces persistent threats: habitat fragmentation, disease spill-over from domestic dogs, and retaliatory killings.

 To mitigate these risks, MCT has incorporated a soft-release strategy allowing the packs to adapt gradually; GPS collars for real-time tracking; ongoing veterinary checks; and intensified outreach to nearby settlements.

Anti-poaching patrols and ranger capacity have also been strengthened as part of the multi-pronged approach.

For local people, the programme offers training and employment in wildlife monitoring, eco-tourism and anti-poaching units — elements aimed at aligning local livelihoods with wildlife stewardship.

MCT says lessons learned in Matusadona will feed into wider Sebungwe landscape plans and could inform future reintroductions in the region.

If the reintroduced packs establish stable territories and breed successfully, their presence could help regulate herbivore populations and boost ecological complexity.

Beyond ecological outcomes, the project is being framed as a test case for conservation built with communities rather than in spite of them — a model advocates hope can be scaled in other parts of Zimbabwe and southern Africa.

As the animals begin to range beyond their holding facilities, Matusadona’s managers and community leaders will be watching closely.

For now, the sight of painted ears and mottled coats through the mopane and miombo woodlands is being celebrated as the return of an iconic, once-lost voice in the park’s wild chorus.

Contacted for comment, ZimParks confirmed continued partnership with African Parks and the Matusadona Conservation Trust on monitoring and community programmes.

Conservationists say the next months will be critical to see whether the reintroduced packs take hold and whether the social safeguards in place are enough to secure a long-term future for the species in Matusadona.
