Doek & Slay isn’t new phenomenon, but all the same, the ladies just love it!

JONATHAN MBIRIYAMVEKA

One of the best lessons from history is that we learn nothing at all!

This is true, in a sense, because there is literally nothing new under the sun. Everything that we see or do today has been done or seen before.

When organisers of Doek and Slay introduced this concept to Zimbabwean audiences, particularly in Harare, it was an instant HIT. It almost felt new and refreshing.

The concept of this event is just a Sunday outdoor party exclusively for women. The emphasis on the dress code, a doek (headscarf for women) is a classic piece of dressing.

Generally, this concept for all women gig worked after previous shows with both men and women had become somewhat violent.

The violence, which marred the shows, were mainly caused by people who double crossed their partners.

The idea of this event was borrowed from South Africa, where it was popularly known as Doek and Jeans or Doek and Glasses.

According to sources, the South African Doek and Jeans organisers wanted to bring the concept across the Limpopo River into Zimbabwe, only to find their concept had been allegedly stolen.

Just recently on Doek and Jeans Facebook page they posted some of the upcoming events which read:

Dear Doek and Jeans Followers,

An update regarding the Burgersfort and Tembisa Events.

As communicated, we have been in discussions with Dr Winnie Mashaba regarding the bookings for the events in question and the below proof of booking done with her booking manager has been shared with her.

There were some miscommunications between the 2 offices and within her office. We were disappointed in how she dealt with the matter, as she could have contacted us before taking the matter on social media as we were dealing directly with her office and we have previously worked with her at Meropa Casino Doek and Jeans Events as seen below and in previous live feeds of our events.

In our discussions with her she had agreed to go live, and clarify that there were misunderstandings between the 2 offices, however no communication has gone out thus far.

We do value our brand and will never post an artist without confirmation from the booking manager.

We will therefore be releasing a new line up for both Burgersfort and Tembisa.

We thank you for your continued support and apologize for any inconvenience caused.

 Regards Doek and Jeans Management

Copying and pasting is not new and yet Doek and Slay organisers did not acknowledge the originators of the concept. The one good thing though was to take the gigs across Zimbabwe and word has it that they are taking the Doek and Slay concept to Zambia and perhaps the United Kingdom!
