ChillSpot Records stablemates — DJ Fantan, Levels and Dammar — who have been sentenced to jail for six months have already divided opinion among their followers.
The three were found guilty of organizing a New Year’s Eve bash that drew thousands in Harare’s most populace township in Mbare contravening the Covid-19 regulations.
While most social media users agree that the trio was wrong in putting thousands at risk of contracting the Coronavirus many said there were many offenders and the law should take its course.
One fan Shel Ton commented: “They have been made an example which I agree to that. Was the sentence fair well not, do they deserve to be inside? Absolutely yes.”
Another follower Yolanda Ngwenya said: “but if they don’t get arrested and sentenced because someone else/some other people did’nt get arrested then that defeats the purpose of the fight for a better, less corrupt system.”
Leah N Magombedze wrote: “Vari wrong pahuwrong hwavo but ngatisungei vese not be selective. I’m actually glad, we can use this to protest further unarrested culprits. We can cry foul now.
Otherwise these dudes were wrong.”
And Mufaro Mufaro replied: “No the sentence shouldn’t be reversed. However we need to see others who also broke the law facing the same penalty. Releasing them.is like saying release a murderer because another person got away with murder. All of them should face the sentence. Full stop.”
Tinashe Zinto commented: “The sentence is likely not going to be reversed. The penal provision of the SI provides for a custodial sentence not in excess of a year or a fine, however considering the magnitude of the gathering and people put in danger, the sentence will not be reversed, actually even getting bail pending appeal is a huddle, the plea was a wrong move in my view, with the media and pressure of Covid-19, they were used to send a very strong message, the did a very big wrong. Shinga Feresu agrees I’m sure. The law is what it is not what it ought to be.”
Samukele Favoured Mpala said: “When are they arresting MDC T members for the elections. Khupe was seen in the video busy wiping her nose with a musk. She already had flue symptoms but she chose to go to a public place and mingle with people. Everyone must face the law.” And Tafadzwa Jengwa said: “Party yakaitwa nanaMutsvangwa, yakaitwa nanaTagwirei and the MDC-T EOC, Mashwede was open and packed too, arrests and prosecutions must be effected on the people involved.”
