Harare – The 7th edition of the Bioskop! Short Film Competition is here, inviting Zimbabwean filmmakers to showcase their creativity, talent and unique perspectives under this year’s theme: “The Best of Zimbabwean Short Film.”
An annual platform celebrating the creativity of Zimbabwean filmmakers, Bioskop! shines a spotlight on the stories, voices and filmmaking talent that continue to shape Zimbabwe’s cinematic landscape.
Are you a filmmaker with a story to tell? Have you created a short film that deserves to be seen and celebrated? This is your opportunity to put your work in the spotlight.
Whether you are an emerging filmmaker taking your first steps or an experienced storyteller looking to share your latest work, Bioskop! invites you to submit your film and be part of a celebration of Zimbabwean cinema.
The Best of Zimbabwean Short Film
This year’s theme celebrates the creativity, diversity and technical excellence of Zimbabwean short film, highlighting the many ways Zimbabwean stories are imagined and brought to the screen.
From compelling fictional narratives and thought-provoking documentaries to exceptional cinematography, sound and performances, the 2026 competition recognises the different creative disciplines that come together to create a memorable film.
The theme is open to interpretation and invites filmmakers to showcase the richness of Zimbabwean cinema in its many forms. If you have a story, a perspective or a film you are proud of, Bioskop! is looking for you.
Competition Categories
The 2026 competition will recognise outstanding work across six categories:
o Best Narrative – For an outstanding fictional or scripted short film.
o Best Documentary – For a compelling non-fiction short that demonstrates strong storytelling and engagement with its subject.
o Best Sound Editing – Recognising exceptional use and crafting of sound in a short film.
o Best Cinematography – Celebrating outstanding visual storytelling, camera work, composition and image-making.
o Best Actor / Actress – Recognising a standout performance that contributes significantly to a film’s storytelling.
o Best Diaspora Narrative – For an outstanding narrative short film by a Zimbabwean filmmaker or one rooted in the Zimbabwean diaspora experience.
Trophies will be awarded across all competition categories, with cash prizes.
Eligibility and Submission Details:
The competition is open to filmmakers of Zimbabwean heritage who are based, living or working in Zimbabwe or in any European or African country.
As in previous editions, participating filmmakers who have family members involved in organising or judging the competition must disclose this relationship to the Festival Coordinators.
Jury members related to a participating filmmaker will not adjudicate in that filmmaker’s category, helping to ensure a transparent and fair adjudication process. Failure to disclose such a relationship may result in disqualification.

o Film Duration: Submitted films must have a minimum runtime of 2 minutes and a maximum of 25 minutes.
o Films completed from May 2025 onwards are eligible for submission.

Bioskop! and the European Film Festival Zimbabwe
Bioskop! is part of the European Film Festival Zimbabwe, a cultural initiative of the European Union that has, over the years, evolved from a platform showcasing European films into a space that celebrates both European and African cinema while supporting Zimbabwe’s local film industry.
The festival has provided opportunities for Zimbabwean filmmakers through screenings, filmmaking workshops, professional development activities, masterclasses and the Bioskop! Short Film Competition itself.
It brings together filmmakers, audiences, cultural practitioners and film enthusiasts, creating opportunities for cultural exchange and engagement through cinema.
In 2026, the European Film Festival is entering a new chapter, with a greater focus on engaging young audiences, particularly university students.
In partnership with the University of Zimbabwe, the festival is being developed as a platform bringing together European and Zimbabwean cinema with screenings, discussions, filmmaking workshops, masterclasses and opportunities for students and emerging creatives to engage with film professionals.
