Hurungwe— In a heart-wrenching case that has shaken the local community, a 70-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the repeated rape of his 16-year-old step-granddaughter, a Form 2 student at a nearby school.
The ruling was delivered by the Karoi Regional Magistrates’ Court, following a disturbing account of abuse that took place in February 2025.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) detailed the horrific circumstances surrounding the three incidents of sexual violence.
The elderly man reportedly entered the victim’s bedroom on separate occasions, where he threatened her life if she resisted or spoke out against him. Each assault involved coercion and violence, leaving the young girl traumatized.
“The offender entered her bedroom, threatened to kill her if she told anyone, and forcibly removed her clothes,” a representative from the NPA stated. “In each instance, the victim was terrified and felt she had no choice but to comply.”
Despite the gravity of the situation and the victim’s repeated refusals, the man continued his assaults, demonstrating a complete disregard for her well-being.
The case has drawn attention to the urgent need for protective measures for vulnerable individuals within families, particularly minors living in potentially dangerous environments.
The court initially sentenced the offender to 15 years for each of the first two counts of rape. However, for the third count, he received an additional 15 years, resulting in a total of 30 years.
Yet, in a decision that has sparked debate, the court suspended 10 years of the sentence for a period of five years, contingent upon the offender not committing any further offenses. This effectively results in an active sentence of 20 years.
This ruling has raised questions about the judicial system’s response to sexual violence, particularly against minors.
Advocates for victims’ rights argue that leniency in sentencing can undermine the severity of such crimes and discourage victims from coming forward.
Community members have expressed outrage and disbelief over the case. Local leaders are calling for greater awareness and educational programs aimed at preventing sexual violence, especially in domestic settings where trust is often misplaced.
As the victim attempts to rebuild her life, the community is left grappling with the reality of such a betrayal from within the family unit.
