Kariba, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Kariba has partnered with pupils from different schools to curb the use of drugs and substance abuse in the community.
The initiative was launched at Nyamhunga Secondary School during a programme dubbed “Not in School,” where Detective Sergeant Lazarus Muzanarwwo addressed learners and urged them to reject harmful substances commonly abused by young people.
Speaking to pupils at the event, Sgt. Muzanarwwo encouraged students to avoid drugs such as Guka and mutoriro, stressing that drug addiction destroys families, education, and future opportunities.
“We are advising you to tell us the basis of drugs and the sellers,” said Sgt. Muzanarwwo, while addressing the learners on the importance of reporting drug activities.
He encouraged pupils to share information they may have about drug dealers or locations where drugs are distributed.
The detective sergeant further said police have already arrested many people in connection with drug-related offences, noting that offenders are now facing charges.
He warned that despite the seriousness of the charges, learners should understand that the effects of drug use are long-lasting and damaging.
“The charge has no fine, so stop taking drugs. If you take drugs, you become addicted,” he said, urging pupils to choose a healthy and productive lifestyle.
Sgt. Muzanarwwo also reminded learners that reporting channels are available, adding that information can be submitted through suggestion boxes or by visiting ZRP offices.
The programme in Kariba represents part of ZRP’s wider efforts to keep young people safe and strengthen cooperation between law enforcement and schools to fight drug abuse.
