Zimbabwe Music Rights Association says it is seized with complains from musicians who have been duped by an organization purporting to be a collecting society.
ZIMURA director of information and publicity Alex Gwenzi aka Goodchild said the fake organization has been collecting money from unsuspecting music users on behalf of artists.
“We have an organisation that has been formed, which i am sure might have been registered, which has been going around collecting money from music users on behalf of, we don’t know who, and this has caused a lot of confusion and so within the next few weeks we will be engaging the relevant authorities in order to stop the madness,” Gwenzi said.
He also announced that the matter in which ZImura was taken to court for misappropriation of funds by former board member Phillip Chipfumbu was dismissed by the High Court on 26 October.
“Honourable Mr Justice Manzunzu dismissed the matter with costs for lack of merit, in other words zvainzi hanuna nyaya. Because surely nyaya chaiyo panga pasina.
“Going forward we implore you members of the press to support us, we plead with you to always feel free to contact us whenever you need any information especially for purposes of clarification.
“When music composers and other stakeholders lose confidence in us collection becomes difficult on our part, members of the public need to be sure that the musicians they love are not being short changed,” Gwenzi said.
