Kariba – The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS) has distanced itself from a viral video allegedly showing individuals in ranger uniforms abusing a handcuffed man.
The disturbing footage, which has triggered outrage in Kariba and beyond, shows a man being whipped with a shambok—a traditional whip—while being forced to perform push-ups.
The graphic nature of the abuse has raised serious questions about the identity and conduct of the perpetrators, who appear to be wearing ZIMPARKS-like uniforms.
In a statement shared via its Human-Wildlife Conflict WhatsApp group, ZIMPARKS condemned the incident and denied any connection to the individuals involved.
“We have noted with concern the video clip that has been widely shared. As ZIMPARKS, we do not condone such actions,” the authority stated, insisting the individuals are not ZIMPARKS rangers.
ZIMPARKS also clarified there is no confirmation that the incident occurred in Kariba. The agency urged anyone with credible information or evidence of abuse to report directly to their offices.
“We encourage community members to engage with us if they are aware of any such incidents in their areas,” the statement added.
This controversy underscores long-standing tensions between wildlife authorities and local communities. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about harassment by enforcement personnel, warning that such incidents erode trust and hinder cooperation in conservation efforts.
As the video continues to circulate, calls for accountability and transparency are mounting. Community leaders are urging ZIMPARKS to engage in open dialogue and implement reforms to prevent future abuses.
