Kariba — In response to a disturbing surge in human-wildlife conflicts, the Parks and Wildlife Management Authority has initiated a crucial awareness campaign in the resort town of Kariba.
This initiative comes on the heels of a tragic series of incidents, with reports indicating that more than 15 residents have been killed by wildlife since January of this year.
The campaign is particularly focused on educating the community about the dangers posed by roaming elephants and crocodiles, especially during the seasonal search for Amarula fruits.
Elephants are known to venture into residential areas during this time, often leading to dangerous encounters with locals.
“Our aim is to provide residents with vital information on how to coexist with wildlife and avoid potential conflicts,” said a spokesperson for the Parks Authority.
“We want to ensure that both the people and the wildlife can thrive in harmony.”
Residents have expressed their gratitude for the campaign, emphasizing the importance of awareness in preventing further tragedies.
“It’s great to see the Parks Authority taking action. We need to understand how to protect ourselves while respecting the wildlife,” said Maria Chikova, a long-time resident of Kariba. “The more we know, the safer we will be.”
Another resident, Tendai Moyo, echoed her sentiments: “I’ve seen elephants so close to my home. This campaign is a reminder that we share this land with these magnificent creatures. Educating ourselves is key to ensuring our safety.”
As the awareness campaign unfolds, the Parks Authority encourages residents to report wildlife sightings and to remain vigilant, particularly during the Amarula fruit season.
The hope is that through education and community engagement, the tragic incidents of the past months can be significantly reduced, fostering a safer environment for both humans and wildlife in Kariba.
