Geo Pomona Waste management chief executive Delish Nguwaya says electricity generation will begin in 2027 with the completion of the energy plant at Pomona Dumpsite.
Speaking during a recent media tour of the dumpsite, Nguwaya said preparatory works for the waste-to-energy plant was well on course.
“As you can see this is the sorting plant where waste will be sorted out selecting waste that can be recycled, the plastics and that which can be used for energy. So, we have to start with the sorting plant first,” Nguwaya said.
He said the project was sustainable in that more waste would be provided to ensure the energy plant has enough raw materials.
Engineer Anesu explained the process of covering up the waste with soil through what is called “encapsulation”.
This process has turned the smelly dumpsite into a more habitable, less air pollution and clean environment.
Several projects are being undertaken at the dumpsite including the construction of a water treatment plant, the sorting plan and waste-to-energy plant.
Already Geo Pomona Waste Management has successfully obtained FIFA certification for its soccer pitch, marking a remarkable transformation from a dumpsite to a world-class sports facility.
Local residents and sports enthusiasts have welcomed the transformation, expressing their excitement about having a FIFA-certified soccer pitch in their community.
The facility is expected to become a hub for sports activities, tournaments, and community events, fostering a sense of unity and pride among residents.
