Harare — Zimbabwe is accelerating its push toward digital transformation in tourism, with smart platforms, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) set to play a major role in enhancing the visitor experience, Tourism Minister Barbara Rwodzi has announced.
Speaking at the HAZ Summit in Harare, the Minister represented by Permanent Secretary Dr Takaruza Tanyanyiwa, emphasised that the “future of hospitality is digital,” urging operators to transition from traditional promotional tools to tech-driven systems that meet global standards.
“We must move from brochures to big data, from paper-based booking to smart platforms,” Rwodzi said.
“Digital innovation will redefine how visitors discover, engage with and enjoy Destination Zimbabwe.”
She said VR and AR technologies offer powerful opportunities — from virtual previews of attractions like Victoria Falls and Great Zimbabwe to immersive cultural storytelling that can inspire travel even before tourists arrive.
The Minister also encouraged operators to adopt online payment systems, automated check-ins, and mobile-responsive booking platforms to boost convenience and competitiveness.
Digital transformation, she added, was vital for future-proofing Zimbabwe’s tourism industry amid global shocks and rapidly changing visitor expectations.
Industry players attending the summit welcomed the push, noting that digital tools can expand market reach, improve efficiency and strengthen the country’s brand visibility globally.
With international arrivals and tourism receipts on the rise in 2025, Rwodzi said embracing new technologies was key to maintaining the country’s upward trajectory.
“Zimbabwe is ready to compete on the global stage,” she said. “Smart tourism is no longer an option — it is the future.”
