Tourism and Hospitality Industry Ministry has moved the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo from Bulawayo to Mutare beginning this year.

The latest development comes hot on the heels of a meeting between Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbara Rwodzi, other key stakeholders and Minister of State for Manicaland Province, Advocate Misheck Mugadza today in Mutare.

However, observers have criticized the move saying it was akin to Durban Indaba being held in Johannesburg.

The observers said if there was need to promote tourism in Manicaland another expo/fair could have been organized in aid of Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo.

The said in the absence of proper road network and an airport it could pose serious logistical nightmares for buyers who will have to travel for another two hours or so by road to Mutare.

Others said there was need to introduce a domestic expo that could be held in every province while leaving Sanganai/Hlanganani as the international once.

The “Durban Indaba” (officially called Africa’s Travel Indaba) is held in Durban, South Africa, because it serves as a central location to showcase the diverse tourism offerings of KwaZulu-Natal province, including Durban’s beaches, rich culture, and proximity to other popular attractions, making it an ideal hub to connect international buyers with African tourism businesses and promote the continent’s travel experiences to a global audience.

And like the Durban Indaba, the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo was traditionally held in Bulawayo for the past decade, in Matebeleland where it is a melting pot of culture, creative art and the City of Kings and Queens.

Announcing the development today, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, said the meeting focused on positioning Manicaland as a prime destination, emphasizing its breathtaking landscapes and diverse attractions.

“This initiative aligns with the government’s devolution agenda, which seeks to ensure that every province plays a key role in driving the country’s tourism growth and development.

“The highlight of the gathering was the announcement that the prestigious Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo will be hosted in Mutare this year.

“Manicaland, home to the majestic Eastern Highlands with its lush Bvumba Mountains, Mtarazi Falls, awe-inspiring Chimanimani ranges, and rich cultural heritage, offers visitors unforgettable experiences,” the statement said.

“The expo will showcase the province’s adventure tourism and investment potential, promising a memorable event that will leave an indelible mark on both local and international tourism enthusiasts.  The countdown to this grand celebration has begun, with Mutare ready to welcome the world!”
