South African television and stage actor Sello Maake kaNcube reconnected with fellow Zimbabwean actor Daves Guzha at Theatre in the Park at the weekend.
Guzha was on stage performing his acclaimed one-man play titled Aikaka where among the audiences were Maake kaNcube together with his wife.
Maake kaNcube is best known for his leading roles in the soap opera Generations as Archie Moroka and on the ETV soap opera Scandal! as Lucas “Daniel” Nyathi.
“Well, I had not met Maake kaNcube since 1988 when we worked together on some production,” Guzha said.
Aikaka marked the return of award winner veteran actor, producer and director Guzha to his first home, theatre, after a 15-year absence.
His last one-man play The Two Leaders I Know (2008) went global and was subsequently turned into a movie.
AIKAKA! which will have a once-off show this Saturday is a typical Shona interjection.
These interjections are short stand-alone phrases often used to exclaim, showing delight or surprise.
Aikaka expresses the speaker’s utter surprise at the sudden turn of events or the sighting of the least expected things in life.
It points at incongruence for example, when you see a man flying or when you see the hare chasing a dog!
The play is packed with the emotional punch and shows that the speaker has suddenly noticed that he has to take immediate remedial action, opposite to what he intended as explained by Memory Chirere, a Zimbabwean poet and short story writer.
Maake kaNcube was part of a group of South African celebrities and African journalists invited by Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa, for a tour of Zimbabwe.
The other notables were South African entertainment personalities — Pearl Thusi and Sonia Mbele.
However, many social media users viewed the visit by SA entertainment personalities as an endorsement for President Mnangagwa and the ruling ZANU PF party ahead of crucial August 23 general elections something they all denied.
