There has been a surge in number of patients with mental health challenges at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital with substance abuse and depression being at the top, an official has said.
Chief therapist Kudzanai Gore said this at a presentation of new rehabilitation equipment at Sally Mugabe Central hospital by Delta Corporation on Monday.
Gore said it was the hospital’s desire to see he psychiatrist unit, the occupational therapy department being equipped and fully functioning and appealed to well-wishers for support.
“One of our desires is to see our psychiatrist unit, the occupational therapy department being equipped and fully functioning and this comes in light of the fact that we are seeing an increase number of patients with mental health challenges with substance abuse and depression being at the top.
“So, there are some activities that we would want to conduct in order to rehabilitate psychiatric patients such as wood workshop gardening arts and crafts sewing and knitting and other various vocational activities that will allow pour patients to be able to get fully rehabilitated and acquire the necessary skills and the attitudes for them to be positively impacting or contributing members of society. So, to any other well-wishers you are welcome to partner with us to equip our psychiatric unit,” she said.
Delta Corporation sourced new equipment for the rehabilitation department at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital to the tune of US$50000.
The equipment comprises exercise bikes, treadmills, smith stations, stairs, ultra sound machines and turn machines among others will give patients access world class treatment.
The rehabilitation department allows patients to achieve their maximum possible level of independence after an illness, injury or disability.
Gore said gone are the days when the hospital referred patients to other health centres as they now have necessary tools of trade.
“So, normally we cater for patients that have urological conditions, orthopedic conditions, surgical, medical and psychiatric conditions.
“These various conditions then require different treatment modalities as well as different equipment to enable us to meet our goal of rehabilitating our patients, so in that light, we received all this different equipment that will allow us to be able to achieve our goal as the rehabilitation department,” she said.
