The ratification of the Agreement establishing the Smart Africa Alliance, which will officially come into force after the upcoming 11th Board Meeting, has been adopted by a minimum of five countries, as required by the Agreement.
The Agreement is a major instrument for the Alliance to operate; for instance, it clarifies the legal status of the Council of African Regulators and the legal nature of the acts that are taken in relation to the governance of Smart Africa.
In his remarks at the 12th Council of African Regulators held ahead of the Transform Africa Summit 2023 in Victoria Falls, Mr Lacina KONÉ, Director General/CEO of Smart Africa said the ratification of the Agreement would fast-track the implementation of cross-border projects which often require agreements and contracts between multiple governments and the private sector.
“This is and will remain the strongest show of support towards this organization and will help us accelerate the progress and realizations
of the Smart Africa Alliance for the next decade that the Alliance is just about to start,” he said.
“There is no ambiguity. Smart Africa is a multi-lateral institution with a strong foundation. The future of the Council of African Regulators and the Smart Africa Alliance is bright.
“As Hannibal, the famous Carthagian general, wisely stated, ‘We will either find a way or create one’.”
The Member States that made the ratification achievement: The Republic of Tunisia, the Republic of Djibouti, the Republic of Angola, the Republic of Guinea, and the Republic of Rwanda.
Mr KONE called on other Member States that are still going through the adoption or ratification process to accelerate the process.
During the 7th meeting of the Council of African Regulators in March 2019 requested the Secretariat to work on a document, beyond the Smart Africa Manifesto, to clarify the legal status of the Smart Africa Alliance.
The Transform Africa Summit 2023 is celebrating the 10th year anniversary of the Smart Africa Alliance, which is testimonial of the resolve of Africa’s digital revolution.
A revolution that is owned by Africans for Africa.
