A total of 13 runners will mark the return of Zimbabwe’s most prestigious race — the Castle Tankard — scheduled for May 7, 2022 at the Borrowdale Park.

The prestigious event proudly sponsored by Delta Beverages through their brand — Castle Lager — had been shelved since the country went into lockdown for the last two years due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Delta Lagers General Manager, Mr Tichafa Rinomhota, hailed the MTC for the race and pledged continued support for the sport.

“Having started in 1960 The Tankard has, and continues to be the only Grade one horse racing event in the country.

“This makes it the most prestigious and sought after Title by horse owners, trainers and jockeys in Zimbabwe, while also commanding the interest and participation of the same, from across the region,” Mr Rinomhota said.

Unveiling the final field horses, Mashonaland Turf Club’s Schwatz said the Castle Tankard was the most important race in the season.

“This is one of the oldest sponsored races in Zimbabwe and it is wonderful that even after the break enforced by Covid-19, the relationship between Delta and the MTC has remained strong and that we are able to hold the race again this year.

“This has always been one of our most important races in the season, and it’s one that every owner wants to win, so thank you Delta for your support.

“To the trainers, it has been tough and challenging few years and we thank you for your dedication and hard work I getting your big runners prepped and ready, it looks like it’s going to be a very competitive field of high caliber horses and I think it’s going to be a really exciting race,” she said.
