The second edition of Nyanga Arts Festival is scheduled to run from 27 to 28 October 2023 in Eastern Highlands.
This year’s theme is: We are #LivingHeritage.
The festival which is a partnership between Nhimbe Trust and Nyanga community will mark 20th Anniversaries of Nhimbe Trust and the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The 2023 programme features a new lineup of exciting artists, of which some are considered national treasures.
Gracing the stage will be the legendary acapella group Black Umfolosi, all the way from the City of Kings, Bulawayo, who grew from humble beginnings as group of young high school boys to a world-class act touring over several decades in multiple performances and reappearances in many countries of the world.
Also featured are the ever-popular Suluman Chimbetu & The Orchestra Dendera Kings, Sarungano & The Story Tellers, The Expression Band, and 20 young artists of diverse genres.
Added to this, the first ever Nyanga Arts Festival Golf Tournament will be hosted by the Claremont Golf Club on Saturday 28 October from 9am; the competition fee of $30 is inclusive of green fees and a halfway meal. The game format is Individual Stableford.
“It’s the opportunity for UNESCO, States Parties to the Convention and all stakeholders involved in the safeguarding of living heritage, to highlight that living heritage belongs to all.
“For this reason, the anniversary is also an invitation to governments, NGOs, universities, bearers, practitioners and those who appreciate living heritage to organize activities, join UNESCO’s social media campaign (#LivingHeritage) and follow anniversary events, online or in person,” a spokesperson said.
“We are grateful to the Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) for its continued association with NAF from inception. This year NAF is having its first Academic Fellow from CUT.
Patricia Mumbengegwi is currently heading the department of Travel and Recreation at Chinhoyi University of Technology.
“Having over 20 years of experience in the tourism industry, she has developed a passion for Cultural Tourism, in particular Living Heritage. This led her to chase festivals and pursue a PhD in Festival Management. She has worked with Hurungwe Arts Festival and Chirorodziva Calabash in Mashonaland West amongst others. Patricia is also a member of the CUT UNESCO SAICH platform which advocates for education and preservation of Intangible Cultural
Heritage in Southern Africa.”
