Masters Tournament preview 11-14 April 2024

The battle for the iconic ‘Green Jacket’, one of golf’s most prestigious prizes, will be played out at the 88th edition of the Masters Tournament, held at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 April 2024.

Last year’s Masters was won by Jon Rahm, who shot 276 (-12) to finish four strokes ahead of co-runners-up Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson. Rahm became the fourth Spaniard to win the tournament, following in the footsteps of Seve Ballesteros (1980 & 1983), Jose Maria Olazabal (1994 1999) and Sergio Garcia (2017).

Rahm now holds something of a controversial position in the golf world, having been the most high-profile ‘defection’ from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf. The two tours had planned to merge, which would have put any angst to bed, but an agreement has not yet been reached.

This means that Rahm, and all of his fellow LIV competitors, are barred from playing in PGA Tour events – with LIV and PGA Tour players only coming together when the four golf majors are played: the Masters, PGA Championship, US Open and the Open Championship.

“I’m definitely looking forward to joining with the rest of the best golfers in the world and teeing it up in the Masters with them” Rahm said. “I’m assuming there will be quite a few that are not happy, but from my side nothing changes. I still respect everybody on both sides and respect the game of golf above all.

“I think there’s a way of coexisting and if there’s some type of union – I don’t know what that looks like. If there is some type of peace achieved, I think it can actually push the game forward”

Rahm is attempting to become just the fourth player to retain the title, and the first since Tiger

Woods achieved the feat in 2001-02.

“I am looking forward to hopefully having a great week and a great Sunday back-nine showdown with some of those great players, because at the end of the day it’s what golf and spectators deserve.”

The field will feature all of the world’s top players (that are fit, available and qualified) and has also seen special invites handed to Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen, Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune and Chile’s Joaquin Niemann at the behest of Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club.

“The Masters Tournament has a long-standing tradition of inviting leading international players

who are not otherwise qualified,” Ridley said. “[This] announcement represents the Tournament’s continued commitment towards developing interest in the game of golf across the world. We look forward to welcoming each player to Augusta National.”
