. . . Only 500 Fans Will Witness ’10 Classic Songs’ Extravaganza

HARARE — For three decades, Alick Macheso has been the undisputed king of sungura, churning out hit after hit across more than 10 albums.
His voice has narrated joy, heartbreak, struggle, and celebration. His guitar lines have become the soundtrack of Zimbabwean life.
But on Friday, 7 August 2026, the maestro will do something he has never done before.
For the first time in his legendary career, Macheso and his backing group, Orchestra Mberikwazvo, will perform a curated set of exactly 10 of his classic songs — a handpicked playlist drawn from his vast catalogue of timeless hits.
And only 500 people will be there to witness it.
The exclusive event, billed as “An Exclusive Night of Timeless Music,” will take place at the Golden Conifer, a venue known for its intimate atmosphere and stylish clientele.
Organisers have set the ticket price at USD 100, with a firm rule: no tickets will be sold at the gate.
“Ayayaaaaaaa Mabhozida edu. Nguva yekufara yacho ndiyoyi, saka ngaibakeeee,” Macheso wrote on his official Facebook page in a statement that has already set social media ablaze with the hashtags #BANDREVANHU, #Chesology, and #10ClassicSongs.
The excitement is understandable. Macheso’s catalog is so deep, so consistently excellent, that asking him to select just 10 songs for a single night is akin to asking a mother to choose her favourite child.
From his early work with Khiama Boys to his solo masterpieces like Mabvi Nemagokora, Matsotsi, and Tinosvitswa Nenyasha, the Bard of Sungura has given his fans an embarrassment of riches.
Which 10 will make the cut?
That question is already fuelling intense debate among Mabhozida — Macheso‘s fiercely loyal fanbase.
Will he include the irrepressible Makandidana, a song that has become a wedding staple across the country?
Will he reach back to Magariro, the spiritual anthem that lifted millions? Will the mournful beauty of Charakupa make the list? What about Madhawu, the track that turned heartbreak into a national catharsis?
And then there are the dance tracks. The songs that, the moment the bassline drops, clear every dance floor of inhibitions. Petunia? Mude Mude? Makazvinzwepi?
Promoters are keeping the playlist a closely guarded secret, promising only that the evening will be “an unforgettable celebration of the magic of classic music” in a “stylish Smart Casual setting.”
The limited capacity — just 500 tickets — is a deliberate choice. This is not a stadium show. There will be no distant figures on a screen, no struggling to hear over thousands of screaming voices.
The Golden Conifer promises intimacy, clarity, and the rare chance to experience Macheso‘s guitar work and Orchestra Mberikwazvo’s legendary harmonies as if they were playing in your own living room.
But that intimacy comes at a price.
At USD 100 per ticket, and with no sales at the gate, this is an event for the committed fan — the one who has followed Macheso from dusty rural bus stops to the grandest stages in Harare, who knows every lyric, every guitar flourish, every call-and-response with the backing vocalists.
For those fans, the price is beside the point.
“Macheso doesn’t just sing,” said one longtime follower who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity.
“He tells our story. When he sings about struggle, he is singing about my struggle. When he sings about hope, he is singing about my hope.
“To hear 10 of his greatest songs in one night, in a small room with only 499 other people who feel the same way? That is not a concert. That is a pilgrimage.”
The date is set: Friday, 7 August 2026. The venue: Golden Conifer. The artist: Alick Macheso, backed by the incomparable Orchestra Mberikwazvo.
The setlist: 10 classic songs, to be revealed only when the maestro steps to the microphone.
