KARIBA – The Lake Harvest Kariba Challenge Marathon is set to make a vibrant return on August 10, 2025, promising a thrilling blend of athleticism, adventure, and community celebration in one of Zimbabwe’s most scenic tourist destinations.
Now a standout fixture on the regional sporting calendar, the event draws elite runners, amateur athletes, wellness enthusiasts, and families from across the globe—offering an unmatched opportunity to experience Kariba’s breathtaking landscape on foot.
Evonne Mudzingwa, Executive Director of Eves Wellness and lead organiser of the marathon, shared her excitement about this year’s edition.
“We’re targeting 600 participants for the 21.1 km and 10 km races, with an additional 50 slots for the Nappy Dash designed for children under 11,” she said.
“Last year, despite taking over just eight weeks before race day after Round Table’s withdrawal, we had 750 registered runners—far more than expected.”
This year, despite a scheduling clash with a competing event promoted by Harare Athletics Club, the marathon has seen strong interest. “We only have 50 slots left, and we’re confident we’ll sell out,” Mudzingwa confirmed.
Local tourism and hospitality operators are already reaping the benefits. With many hotels and lodges fully booked, the influx of visitors is expected to inject much-needed revenue into the area.
Tichaona Matiki, owner of Waterfront Resort, praised the event’s impact.
“Events like the Lake Harvest Marathon shine a spotlight on Kariba. They don’t just attract visitors—they support our entire local economy, from accommodation to vendors,” he said.
Safari guide Maxton Kanhema agreed: “This marathon is a golden opportunity to showcase Kariba’s natural beauty to visitors who may never have considered coming here otherwise.”
Beyond the race, the event has a philanthropic side. Proceeds from previous editions have gone toward wildlife conservation and improvements at Kariba Hospital.
“We’re proud to continue that legacy,” said Mudzingwa. “The marathon is about more than running—it’s about uplifting our community.”
The event also puts family fun at its heart, with the Nappy Dash for kids under 11 drawing particular attention.
Local brands like Lobels and Cairns have stepped in to sponsor fun packs and goodies.
“We’re encouraging parents to bring their little ones and enjoy the festivities together,” Mudzingwa added.
Despite early logistical hurdles and competition from rival events, anticipation for the Lake Harvest Kariba Challenge Marathon remains high.
With a focus on continuous improvement, inclusivity, and community engagement, the 2025 edition is poised to be the most memorable yet.
