Kariba Municipality has applauded waste recyclers in the city for meaningfully contributing to the town’s solid waste management.
Individuals and small enterprises are significantly contributing to public health and safety, as well as the environmental sustainability of the resort town.
In a recent statement, Kariba Municipality recognized the vital role played by local waste pickers, praising their efforts in providing the only form of solid waste collection while simultaneously enhancing public health in the city.
Kariba Municipality, Environmental Health Technician Malvin Mokorerafor emphasized the importance of waste collectors in the town’s solid waste management plan.
He noted that their contributions are essential in maintaining a clean environment, which is crucial for the health of the community.
“Kariba always considers waste collectors as key players in our solid waste management strategy,” Korera stated. “Their hard work helps us keep the city’s environment clean and safe for all residents.”
Livison Chambati, director of Leverin Enterprises, expressed pride in the role that his business and other waste recyclers play in not only keeping Kariba clean but also contributing to the steel industry in Zimbabwe.
“We are proud of our contributions, but we face significant challenges, particularly in securing funding from local banks. They often fail to recognize the importance of our work.”
Chambati’s sentiments were echoed by Aaron Musimbira, a scrap dealer who highlighted the employment opportunities that waste collection has created for both the young and the elderly in Kariba.
“Waste collection has provided jobs for many in our community, allowing families to support themselves.”
The recognition of waste pickers comes in light of a growing concern over poor waste management practices.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme, inadequate waste management—ranging from non-existent collection systems to ineffective disposal—leads to air pollution and contamination of water and soil.
Globally, millions of people earn a living by collecting, sorting, recycling, and selling materials that others have discarded. Their efforts not only help manage waste but also contribute to a more sustainable and healthier environment.
As Kariba Municipality continues to acknowledge the contributions of waste pickers, it highlights the need for greater support and recognition of their essential role in solid waste management and environmental sustainability.
