In a significant move to revitalize the local tourism sector, operators from various segments convened at the Waterfront Resort yesterday.
The gathering saw participation from boat owners, travel agents, hoteliers, and representatives from tourism-related businesses, all focused on addressing challenges and seizing opportunities within the industry.

The meeting underscored a pressing need for a more coordinated and effective marketing strategy aimed at attracting both domestic and international tourists. Despite Kariba’s stunning natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and the allure of Lake Kariba, stakeholders recognized that the region’s tourism potential remains largely untapped.
Participants exchanged innovative marketing strategies, including the development of targeted digital campaigns and collaborations with international tour operators.
Compelling promotional materials showcasing unique experiences, such as fishing, wildlife safaris, and cultural tours, were also suggested as vital tools for attracting visitors.
Pricing strategies emerged as a critical topic, with stakeholders advocating for a more standardized and competitive pricing structure across tourism offerings. The idea of a tiered pricing system that caters to diverse market segments was debated, alongside the necessity for transparent communication of pricing to potential tourists.

Beyond marketing and pricing, the meeting addressed crucial issues such as infrastructure development and environmental sustainability.
Participants emphasized the need for continued investment in infrastructure to enhance the overall tourist experience, including improved road networks and upgraded facilities at attractions.
The importance of sustainable practices and community engagement in tourism development was also highlighted, ensuring that local communities benefit equitably from the sector’s growth.
The meeting concluded with a strong commitment from all participants to collaborate on the growth and sustainability of Kariba’s tourism sector.
A follow-up meeting is planned to solidify action plans and establish working groups to tackle the identified challenges. The general consensus among stakeholders was that a unified approach is essential to unlock Kariba’s full tourism potential and position it as a premier destination in the region.
Washington Makulumo, director of Sunset Safaries said: “We have incredible assets in Kariba, and it’s time we come together to market them effectively. A coordinated approach will benefit everyone in the long run.”
Jaiwa Chikomborero of Shark Cruises said: “Standardizing our pricing will not only attract more visitors but also build trust. Clear communication is key to making tourists feel confident in their choices.”
“Sustainability must be at the heart of our tourism strategy. It’s not just about attracting visitors; it’s about preserving our environment for future generations.”
Waterfront Resort owner Mr Tichaona Matiki said he was happy with the development.
“We’re excited to support this initiative. Our facilities are open for future meetings, and we believe that collaboration is the way forward.”
As the tourism sector in Kariba gears up for a transformative phase, the commitment and enthusiasm displayed by its operators signal a promising future for this beautiful region.
