Some 70-outstanding medical practitioners were recently honoured by the National Medical Excellence Awards (NMEA) institute in Harare.
This was the second edition of the NMEA, which recognizes exceptional contributions in the medical field.
The guest speaker, Professor Samkange, a renowned urologist and distinguished medical educator, congratulated the winners via a live speech from overseas.
“In my long time at the University of Zimbabwe, College of Health and Sciences, I found out that trainees were always fearful of examinations where they really need not to,” Professor Samkange said.
“The purpose of examinations is to assure the public through the regulatory bodies that they will receive the certificates when they are deemed to have passed. No candidate who deserves to fail should ever pass. This protects the public.”
Professor Samkange added that examinations also recognise exceptional performances, allowing gifted candidates to be picked up, recognised, and given the opportunity to focus on their exceptional strengths, guiding their careers towards their best performances over a lifetime.
Among the 70 practitioners honoured were Dr Johannes Marisa, who received awards for outstanding leadership in private medical practice, excellence in public health, and mentorship excellence in public health, among others.
Dr Marisa is a medical doctor at Westview Clinics and Westview Group of Schools, who is popular for providing free medical treatment to vulnerable Zimbabwean artists and sponsoring education for underprivileged children.
Other notable awardees included Dr Farzana Naeem, who received awards for outstanding contribution to mental health, excellence in clinical psychology, and leadership in healthcare advocacy, among others.
Professor Michael Ikeogu was honoured for his outstanding contribution to pediatrics, while Platinum Radiology received awards for excellence in diagnostic imaging, patient care and satisfaction, team excellence, and environmental sustainability.
The NMEA’s research team is dedicated to recognising the exceptional contributions of these heroes and heroines and to inspiring them to continue striving for excellence.
The evening was a resounding success, thanks in part to Dr Jemedze and Platinum Radiology, who were the first to secure their tables.
