Kariba– The funeral of beloved businessman Farai Zengeya, known affectionately as Uncle Fatso, drew an immense crowd today, bringing the tourist resort town of Kariba to a standstill.
Zengeya, who passed away on Friday at the age of 50 in Harare’s Parirenyatwa Hospital after a short illness, was laid to rest at John Range Cemetery.
True to his wishes, as expressed through the local business community, the three-night bashes held in his honor reflected the deep respect and admiration he garnered throughout his life.
Zengeya’s sudden passing shocked many, especially his family and close friends, who gathered to pay their last respects.
His brother, Mr. Shepard Zengeya, confirmed the news, stating, “Yes, it’s true he died in Harare after just a short illness.
He will be missed in our family; he always united us during disputes.” He expressed his surprise at the overwhelming turnout, noting, “I didn’t know that Kariba was so united.”
The funeral procession witnessed hundreds of mourners, so many that many were unable to view the body due to the sheer number of people present. Kariba’s Mayor, Ralph Maoneyi, spoke during the burial, highlighting Zengeya’s promising business career and ability to stand tall among other entrepreneurs.
The Zengeya family home in Nyamhunga was a hub of activity, with adjacent streets closed off to traffic for three days as mourners paid their respects.
A long procession of vehicles made its way to John Range Cemetery, where Zengeya was finally laid to rest.
Farai Zengeya was the last son of the late Zebedia Zengeya, the first Black councillor in Kariba. He served as a councillor for a decade and was later accorded the title of elderman.
His legacy as a community leader and businessman will be remembered fondly by those who knew him.
In a notable incident back in 2010, Zengeya made headlines when he declined to allow his son to proceed to secondary education, citing a spiritual conviction that it was not the right path for his family at that time.
As Kariba mourns the loss of a significant figure, the outpouring of love and support from the community serves as a testament to Zengeya’s impact and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
