The Electoral Support Network of Southern Africa (ESN-SA) and the Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) on Tuesday arrived in South Africa to observe the 2024 national and provincial elections as part of efforts to reinforce transparency, credibility, and fairness, contributing to the overall integrity of the 2024 South African elections.
The 10 member mission comprising of experienced election practitioners will be deployed to Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape Provinces to assess whether the electoral process was conducted in accordance with the laws of the country as well as to assess whether the country’s electoral framework conforms to regional and international principles, norms, standards, and best practices.
“The joint ESN-SA and ZESN Observer Mission will provide an impartial and accurate appraisal of the electoral environment, draw lessons that inform its advocacy interventions in the regions and proffer recommendations for improving electoral processes,” a statement reads.
“Furthermore, this will also serve as a learning mission to draw lessons from South Africa to improve the region’s electoral integrity.
“This significant endeavour underscores the Networks’ commitment to promoting democratic integrity and transparent electoral processes across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.”
The Electoral Support Network of Southern Africa (ESN-SA) is a regional network of 15 non-governmental organisations working in the area of elections in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
It was established in January 1998. And the Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) is a coalition of 37 Non-Governmental Organizations committed to coordinating elections-related activities.
ZESN’s primary focus is to promote democratic processes and ensure fair elections in Zimbabwe.
