Kariba – Preparations are in full swing for the Mashonaland West Province Traditional Leaders Day Celebrations, scheduled for Thursday, October 16, at the Kariba Boat Squadron Regiment.
This year’s event, hosted by the Zimbabwe National Army’s Mechanized Brigade, will run under the theme:
“Dedicated to Preserve, Promote and Safeguard Zimbabwe’s Cultural Heritage, National Values, and Hunhu/Ubuntu.”
The celebrations aim to honor the pivotal role of traditional leaders in preserving Zimbabwe’s cultural identity. The day will culminate in a scenic boat cruise on Lake Kariba, promising a vibrant blend of cultural expression, heritage, and community spirit.
Honoring Custodians of Culture
Lieutenant Colonel Petros Nkata, Officer Commanding the Mechanized Brigade, emphasized the significance of the day.
“This day is important for us as it allows us to honor traditional leaders who play a crucial role in preserving our cultural heritage. We are committed to ensuring the event reflects the values and traditions that define our nation,” he said.
Desmond Gumbochuma, Kariba District Development Coordinator, echoed these sentiments.
“Traditional Leaders Day is not just a celebration—it is a reaffirmation of our identity and heritage. We encourage all community members to join us in recognizing the invaluable contributions of our traditional leaders,” he said.
A Time to Reflect and Unite
Chief Musambakaruma also shared his thoughts on the upcoming event.
“As traditional leaders, we bear the responsibility of safeguarding our cultural practices and values. This celebration provides a platform to reflect on our heritage and ensure its transmission to future generations.”
The event is expected to draw high-level attendees, including the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon. Marian Chombo, along with traditional leaders from Mashonaland West and Midlands Provinces—a testament to the occasion’s national significance.
As preparations near completion, the Kariba community is abuzz with anticipation for what promises to be a day of pride, cultural pride, and unity.
