Gono makes new resolution for 2021

Former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor Dr Gideon Gono intends to offer public lectures in the coming year.

The 61.-year-old Gono who was the guest of honour at a book launch titled “Try New Spanners” by Dr Tinashe Eric Muzamhindo recently.

“I was shocked to have been invited to be the guest of honour because as a senior citizen I thought I had expired and retired. But I would want to say that next year I should be doing public lectures and offer my knowledge including drawing lessons from this book Try New Spanners,” he said.

Dr Gono said Zimbabwe could benefit if people worked across political lines, regions and provinces, gender, creed, or colour as long as one’s skills set is aligned to national objectives.

In reference to the book, Gono emphasized the need to observe the horses for courses rule which aptly describes the teachings on choosing people for different roles depending on their particular experiences and skills and not on any other criteria.

He described the book as “serious staff” likening it to bobjones 450 and combination of spanners of various sizes.

“I was reminded of a one type of spanner, a bob-jones (bobbejaan) which our forefathers called bhobhojani . . . yes when all other spanners failed you would hear my father calling for a bobjani and you knew that the gam had ‘reached another level’ “ he said.

“The loyalty of spanners to their ‘courses’ is that when called upon to do the jobs to which they were made, they never let you down but don’t use a wrong spanner for a different size bolt and nut and expect make progress. You will remain where you are and die there! Muzamhindo illustrates that very well in his book.”

The 36-year-old Muzamhindo is a Harare based Policy Researcher and Zimbabwe Institute of Strategic Thinking Country Director.

He said Try New Spanners was set to make significant inroads in the market with personal life-touching experiences that relate to our own situation as a nation. Narrating his humble beginnings, he said the book points out many areas that commonly affect society’s psychological and cultural aspects as we go through many phases of life.
