Former James Chimombe’s bassist dies!

Former James Chimombe’s bassist — Nicholas Kagona — has died.

The veteran bass guitar player died Tuesday due to as yet unknown ailment.

Musician producer and singer Clive Mukundu announced via Facebook the sad passion of Kagona who was lovingly called Mdhara Nico.

We have just received the sad news of the passing of prolific bass player, m`dara Nicholas Kagona. He passed away last night.

“When James Chimombe switched from the “Jojo Mudiwa wangu” type of Jiti to the Jazzier type that made him popular it was because he was now being backed by the full Ocean City Band, after they had left Mukadota. (Safirio Madzikatire).

“Nicholas Kagona was on bass,& Mdara Philip Svosve on Sax.

James Chimombe approached Kagona,& Kagona convinced Mdara Philip Svosve, who was the band leader, to let Chimombe join as the vocalist. Immediately Chimombe’s sound changed, with a complete brass section keyboards & mdara Kagona’s basslines.

“I had the honour to work with him when I produced the last Jabavu drive album. I also did a number of Cameo performances at their gigs,” he wrote.

Mdara Kagona’s funeral is in Budiriro 1. Funerals arrangements will be announced in due course.

Meanwhile fans have reacted to the death of Kagona with one saying: “He was a great person indeed and good musician along with personality.”

Another fan simply wrote” Nematambudziko (Condolences).
