Embracing ESG: POTRAZ’s Future is Sustainable

By Jonathan Mbiriyamveka

HARARE – In a landmark session aimed at shaping the future of Zimbabwe’s digital landscape, experts have presented a compelling case for the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) to fully integrate Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into its core operations.

The insights, drawn from two distinct presentations, outline a roadmap where ESG is not just a compliance exercise but a strategic tool to enhance customer trust, operational efficiency, and national impact.

The internal presentation, led by POTRAZ’s own Valerie Muyambo, framed ESG as a direct enhancer of the customer experience.

Meanwhile, Dr. Farai Matawa of the Scientific and Industrial Research and Development Centre (SIRDC) provided the technical backbone, detailing the frameworks and maturity levels for a successful sustainability journey. Together, their messages create a powerful synergy for the regulator.

From Regulatory Compliance to Customer Loyalty

A key takeaway is the direct link between ESG and POTRAZ’s public-facing mandate. Muyambo’s presentation argued that “ESG shows up in how we treat customers” and that “service is where values become visible.” This translates into tangible actions:

Environmental Action: Promoting paperless, digital services and e-platforms to reduce the environmental footprint of both POTRAZ and its licensees.

Social Action: Ensuring every customer interaction is fair, respectful, and inclusive, thereby building public trust.

Governance Action: Upholding data privacy, handling complaints transparently, and acting with integrity in all dealings.

According to the presentation, the benefit of this ESG-driven service is “stronger customer loyalty” and a “better reputation and public image”—crucial assets for a national regulator.

A Structured Path to Sustainable Governance

Dr. Matawa’s detailed presentation provided the “how,” outlining a structured pathway for POTRAZ to embark on its ESG journey. He emphasized that ESG is a “requirement to attract investment and customers,” moving beyond optional to essential.

He recommended a two-pronged starting approach:

Current State Analysis: Understanding POTRAZ’s current performance in areas like energy usage, data management, and community engagement.

Materiality Assessment: Identifying which ESG issues—from data security to digital inclusion—are most critical to POTRAZ and its stakeholders.

Dr. Matawa presented an “ESG Maturity Model,” challenging POTRAZ to evolve from a basic, compliance-focused level to becoming a “Transformative” leader where ESG drives business strategy and innovation.

Synergizing for a Responsible Digital Future

The convergence of these two perspectives paints a clear picture: ESG is the bridge between POTRAZ’s regulatory duties and its broader societal role.

By adopting the practices Muyambo championed—such as those seen in leading telecoms focusing on inclusive access—POTRAZ can directly fulfill the mandate outcomes tied to consumer protection and market development.

Simultaneously, by following Dr. Matawa’s framework to develop formal ESG policies on everything from energy management to data governance, POTRAZ can build a resilient, transparent, and future-proof organization.

A Call to Action

The session concluded with a powerful call to action for every POTRAZ staff member: to “Think ESG in every customer interaction” and to “act with empathy, integrity, and care.”

As the nation moves forward, POTRAZ is positioned not just to regulate the digital sector but to lead by example, proving that a commitment to people, the planet, and ethical governance is the foundation for building a truly responsible and inclusive digital future for all Zimbabweans.
