Digital inclusion levels low in Africa: POTRAZ

Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe Director General Dr Gift Machengete says Africa faces challenges in ensuring everyone is connected.

Speaking at the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) Day, Dr Machengete said smart phone penetration and digital literacy rates were low.

“Digital inclusion levels are also very low on the continent. In this regard, a lot still needs to be done to ensure we get where we need to in terms of ICT access and use.

“To reach our goals in term of broadband connectivity and inclusive access and use of ICTs we have to capitalise on the vast investment opportunities in Africa brought about by rapid urbanization and increasing population,” Dr Machengete said.

This year’s ATU Day ran under the theme:  “Towards a Digital Revolution and Inclusion of the Marginalized: Addressing Accessibility Factors”.

The ATU Day commemorations were held to recognize the importance of telecommunications in Africa, celebrate the progress made in the field of telecommunications, recognize its impact on various sectors of society, and to honour the achievements of member states.

Dr Machengete said Zimbabweans needed to collaborate in order to foster excellence and win the digital revolution.

Dr Machengete thanked ATU for coordinating Africa to reclaim its orbital spaces which had been degraded otherwise colonised.
