In a troubling case that highlights the urgent need for child protection, Godknows Mberikwazvo, a local Paster, faces serious charges of engaging in sexual intercourse with a minor.
The accusations stem from incidents that allegedly occurred between May 15 and July 12, 2025, involving a 16-year-old girl whose identity has been withheld for legal reasons. Mberikwazvo has been remanded in custody until August 7 for the continuation of the trial.
The case came to light when the victim’s mother discovered her daughter emerging from Mberikwazvo’s room.
This alarming incident prompted a thorough investigation, leading to the current charges under Section 70(1)(a) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, as well as provisions from the 2024 Criminal Law Amendment (Protection of Children and Young Persons Act).
According to prosecutor Nyasha Paundi, Mberikwazvo initially proposed a romantic relationship to the minor on May 15, 2025, which she declined.
Two days later, he reportedly made a second attempt, instructing her to visit his room during the night. Although the complainant did enter the room, she stated that no inappropriate actions occurred during that visit.
However, the situation escalated on a subsequent occasion when Mberikwazvo allegedly forced the young girl onto the bed and engaged in unprotected sexual intercourse with her.
This incident has raised significant concerns about the rising incidence of similar cases in Kariba. Just last week, the Kariba Magistrate Court dealt with three other cases involving sexual offenses against minors, underscoring a disturbing trend in the community.
Local advocates for child welfare are calling for increased vigilance and preventive measures to protect young people from sexual exploitation.
Many are urging parents to maintain open lines of communication with their children about personal safety and to report any suspicious behavior.
As the trial progresses, the community watches closely, hoping for justice while grappling with the broader implications of child safety in the region.
The outcome of this case will be critical in shaping future discussions about the protection of minors and addressing the alarming rise in sexual offenses against children in Kariba.
