Police have arrested Cordelia Masalethulini’s boyfriend Fungai Quintone Tawengwa (46) on suspicion of murder as investigations intensify into the tragic death of the celebrated broadcaster.
Authorities confirmed that further investigations are underway, with a postmortem examination scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
According to close friend and fellow journalist Zanile Ndlovu, the family is awaiting formal clearance from the police before burial preparations begin.
“The family has agreed that until the police have cleared the release of the body, people will not start gathering at the house. Once we have access to the docket and further details, we will keep everyone updated. Thank you so much for the continued support,” said Ndlovu.
Cordelia Masalethulini’s body was discovered in the early hours of Monday morning along the Borrowdale–Helensvale Road.
While the circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear, police have indicated that foul play is suspected, prompting the arrest of her partner as investigations continue.
The shocking incident has sent waves of grief across the media and arts communities, where Cordelia (45) was widely respected for her remarkable career.
She was the younger sister of former Miss Malaika, Brita Masalethulini, and carved out an impressive path of her own in broadcasting and storytelling.
Cordelia began her career in South Africa as a lead news anchor at eNCA, while also working as an actress and playwright.
She later returned to Zimbabwe, where she joined ZBC News, presenting on both Main News and Good Morning Zimbabwe.
Her journalistic influence grew further when she joined Eleven Dogs as the State of the Nation anchor, taking over following the death of the late Zororo Makamba.
Beyond mainstream media, Cordelia founded CocoMass Productions, an independent media house that produced documentaries and various television shows, cementing her reputation as a powerful and purposeful storyteller.
She is survived by her daughter, Shamiso.
Friends and colleagues from her university days at Wits University have described her death as devastating and deeply personal. Tributes continue to pour in as many call for justice.
“I am shattered by her tragic passing. I hope the culprit is caught and brought to justice,” said a close friend.
Police say investigations are ongoing and more details will be released as they become available.
